The Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has said that he expects upcoming negotiations process to yield a positive outcome by the end of this year.

“I expect important progress to be achieved by the end of this year and a solution by the beginning of 2009” he said, adding that there was sufficient accumulation of work carried out on the Cyprus Issue in order to achieve that goal."

"Press in divided Cyprus hopeful but cautious on peace talks

The press on both sides of the Cypriot divide on Saturday voiced cautious optimism of a breakthrough in efforts to reunify the divided island after leaders set a date for full peace negotiations.

'It's obvious that the start of talks does not mean that the difficulties and obstacles have been surpassed,' the Greek Cypriot mass-selling Phileleftheros newspaper said."

Nicosia. The agreement between the Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias and the leader of Turkish people in Cyprus Mehmed Ali Talyat, which had been signed on Friday, about the beginning of the negotiations under the Cyprus issue is the central subject in Cyprus media on Saturday. The first two meetings will be on September 3rd and 10th, Filelefteros reports."
